If you need a little extra room on your computer's desktop, it could be as close as your USB port. Many manufacturers are coming out with displays or display adapters that use a technology called DisplayLink. It allows adding the monitors without having to install a beefier video card.
There are some things to consider when using DisplayLink. Devices draw their power from the USB connection, so some require two free USB ports, as the power drain can be high (the second port provides additional power). Also, DisplaLink relies on graphics processing in the computer- so it may not be the best option for gaming and other graphics-intensive applications. DisplayLink is also limited by the bandwidth of USB. That means it's not ideal for driving high-resolution monitors.
