For many people, knowing where their families originated is of great importance. In fact, people spend lots of money and time tracing their roots. But for many African Americans, going back in time can have its share of stumbling blocks.
Archivist and Millbrook, Al. native Frazine Taylor says the history of slavery makes finding some information particularly difficult. But she has used old traditions and new technology to gather familial information dating back to the early 1800's. In fact, through library archives and sites like Ancestry.com, she has gathered U.S. Census data, marriage licenses and business records to create her family tree.
As a former head of reference for the Alabama Department of Archives and History, Taylor says she has learned more about herself by learning about her ancestors.
"It gave me a sense of pride to know I have family members who owned 400 acres of land... I have roots." Taylor says.
She also gives tips for any person interested in tracing their lineage:
1. Talk with family members 2. Use library archives, court records 3. Use websites like ancestry.com 4. Join a local genealogical support group 5. Seek a genealogical consultant
