Second week of Gabe Watson's trial begins Monday

Posted: Updated:

Monday marked the second week of Gabe Watson's capital murder trial, and testimony mainly  focused on information from Watson and his late wife's, Tina Thomas Watson, dive computers and whether she could have surfaced while in trouble by inflating her dive vest.

Watson is accused of plotting to kill his wife before they left Alabama on their honeymoon. She died while scuba diving in Australia.

The most emotional testimony Monday came from Tina's friend, Amanda Phillips, who fought back tears as she took the stand. Phillips said she was surprised Tina decided to scuba dive because she didn't like to swim. She testified that when Gabe and Tina broke up in 2003, Tina spent time with Phillips' cousin to look at pursuing a relationship. Phillips also said that Gabe told her he was relieved he didn't take out a one-million dollar life insurance policy because he'd be sitting in jail on involuntary manslaughter charges.

"I know that they had discussed that they were going to be changing the policies they did have and that they could have changed it to a million-dollar life insurance policy," said Philliips.

Several dive experts testified, including Wade Singleton, who brought Tina to the surface.

Tina Watson's father is also expected to testify. Prosecutors believe Tommy Thomas will say that his daughter had told him weeks before the wedding that Watson wanted her to increase her work life insurance policy and make him the sole beneficiary.

The trial is expected to last two to three more weeks.
