Social media in natural disasters

Posted: Updated:

The power of social media quickly became evident in the January storms and also back on April 27, 2011. ABC 33/40's Chief Meteorologist James Spann received national recognition for his use of networks like Facebook and Twitter during the severe weather outbreaks to get information to you.

The Alabama Social Media Association is a group that's all about showing the power of sites like Facebook and Twitter. The nonprofit group held an event Monday morning in Birmingham. Organizers say by bringing people together, they can share  ideas and resources. Spann's talk covered topics like the importance of being consistent online, updating often and being      compassionate with the public as you share information. Those are ways, he said, users can make social media more effective in times of natural disasters. The group members hope the talk will encourage more people to get engaged online.

The Alabama Social Media Association holds social events every month and meetings every other month. The events are free and open to the public.
