Much of the country has thus far escaped a brutal winter. However, if you suffer from seasonal allergies, your troubles may soon be in full swing. Allergists say a mild winter can mean an early allergy season.
Doctors are noting that people who suffer from tree pollen are already reporting symptoms. Most spring allergies don't usually start until late March, when the trees begin to bloom. Recent studies have also shown that warmer temperatures could prolong ragweed season by 15 days to a month. That's because certain plants and mold are in full force on warm days. A ragweed allergy is one of the most common forms of spring allergies. Usual symptoms include sneezing, nasal congestion and mild coughing.
Although allergies aren't deadly, they can lead to more serious problems such as sinus infections, known as sinusitis. Also, people with asthma can suffer more complications from allergies. Experts say if you're being treated by an allergist, now may be a good time to make an appointment to talk over a medication plan.
Mild sufferers may find over-the-counter drugs can work. Also, take steps to prevent allergies, like keeping the windows closed when pollen counts are high.
