In an effort to re-establish the greenery lost in Alabama during two rounds of devastating tornadoes, trees are being given away in Cullman County. Thursday, February 23, you can get a tree at the Festhalle Market Platz in Cullman or the Hanceville Recreation Center in Hanceville. They can be picked up between 8:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., or until all the trees are gone.
The Alabama Tree Recovery Campaign is a joint effort between the Alabama Forestry Commission and Arbor Day Foundation to replace trees in Alabama communities lost due to the April 2011 tornadoes. The forestry commission says that through this campaign, people across the U.S. can give back to our state's communities and know they had a hand in rebuilding Alabama's urban forests.
There will be no sign up process for individual citizens. The Alabama Forestry Commission is working to prioritize communities heavily affected by the tornadoes. Cities and towns that were directly in the path of or within a half-mile away are the priority.
On the same day, a Tree City Dedication Ceremony will be held in front of Cullman City Hall. This will include a Tree City flag raising and other special presentations.
