If you're a history buff or an outdoor enthusiast, there's a place in Birmingham where you can enjoy both hobbies. It's called Red Mountain, a rust-stained ridge nestled in the southwest corner of Birmingham.
The history of Red Mountain is rich in culture and minerals, in fact, the area once made Birmingham a production mecca after the Civil War. Miners processed the site's iron ore.
Now, the Red Mountain Park staff and the Friends of Red Mountain Park group plan to bring that history to surface in coming weeks. They plan to open 10 miles of walking trails for the public, and eventually, they will unveil a Visitor's Center, large area of green space and pavilions, says Park Ranger Eric McFerrin.
