Right now, only state troopers can pull over speeders on interstate sections, running through cities with fewer than 19,000 people, but the measure would allow police departments in those cities to also patrol interstates.

Democratic Senator Rodger Smitherman says the current rules were adopted because some smaller cities had run excessive speed traps in the past.
