More tapes, drop phones and code words in bingo bribery retrial

MONTGOMERY - AL -

A co-conspirator in the bingo bribery case claims code words and drop phones were used to contact lawmakers and lobbyists about the bingo vote. Country Crossing developer Ronnie Gilley says that's because he knew the law was being broken.

In the taped calls played in court, jurors often heard the word "democracy" and Gilley asking to be called back on his other phone. He says he was changing his phones out on a weekly, even bi-weekly basis and using that code word to cover up the wrong doing.

"It looks like we're in for a long day," said Joe Epsy, VictoryLand owner Milton McGregor's attorney.

One by one, Gilley discussed the role each defendant played. It began with testimony about daily conversations with McGregor about getting the bingo votes at any cost.

On taped calls, lobbyist Tom Coker and Country Crossing spokesman Jay Walker discuss offering state senators campaign help, country entertainers for so-called democracy tours, and even the purchase of cars from former Senator Jim Preuitt.

"We were discussing a good bit of illegal activity on phones," said Gilley. "I use democracy as a guise."

Preuitt and former Senator Larry Means both voted "yes' for the electronic bingo legislation.

After that vote, Means is heard on another tape telling Massey, "I'm gonna need help from ya'll."

Gilley also testified Senator Harri Anne Smith said "I'm yours" after receiving money.

Defense attorneys are waiting for their turn with Gilley.

"The test of any witness is cross examination. That's where you find out where we are," said Espy.

"His demeanor has changed some. But it's always a good demeanor on the front hand then the backhand you get to see the real person," said Susan James, an attorney for Walker.

The prosecution is expected to take the remainder of Thursday for direct examination of Gilley.
