Disasters like fires or floods can kill the data on your computer- and can also kill your backup, if it's in your home. This problem can be solved by getting a rugged backup unit, like the SoloPro from ioSafe. The unit is fire resistant up to 1550 degrees for a half-hour. It can also take being immersed in water (freshwater or saltwater) up to ten feet deep for 72 hours. The SoloPro can be a little pricey, but saving some of your important data can be worth it.
Another way to protect your data is to have three copies of it in two locations: the original, one backup that's on-site and easy to access, and one stored off location just in case of a natural disaster.
