Singer Nat King Cole was just 45 years old when he died on this day in 1965. He left the world with music still listened to almost 50 years later.
Cole was born in Montgomery, but moved to Chicago when he was four.
His introduction to music came at the hands of his mother who taught him to play organ and piano. Cole's father was a Baptist minister.
While his baritone voice made him "unforgettable," he also became one of the first African Americans to host a television variety show.
Nat King Cole once said, "I'm not playing for other musicians. We're trying to reach the guy who works all day and wants to spend a buck at night."
