Three young men, including one who was a junior at Wenonah High School, sit in the Jefferson County Jail awaiting trial for capital murder. The three are charged with executing five men at a house in Ensley Highlands on January 29th. That crime brought a whole new meaning to Wednesday's annual Unity Breakfast.
Through songs and speeches, Birmingham leaders at Wenonah High School offered up the message of unity.
"We are all stakeholders. And we all have roles to play," Superintendent Craig Witherspoon.
Unity is something Wenonah High Student Joshua Holmes agrees is needed. It's hard to accept that a junior from Wenonah faces charges in one of the deadliest crimes in the city's history," he says.
"We didn't know something so tragic could happen in every day life, like with people we see all the time. so it kind of impacted us negatively and the school kind of went down," Holmes says.
"We can not depend on the school teachers to train our children. We can not depend on the police department to discipline our children and our young people. Parents have to start being parents," Jay Roberson, Councilor 7th district, says.
Birmingham police chief A.C. Roper admits arresting young people always strikes an emotional cord.
"It's a major concern not just for the police department but it should be of concern for every member of our society because it means somewhere we dropped the boat," Roper says.
