Doctors see big demand for the "little blue pill" among aging American men.

Erectile dysfunction drugs like Viagra do wonders to restore sexual activity, but these pills do come with drawbacks.

With more baby boomers and seniors becoming single and sexually active, new studies show a spike in sexually transmitted diseases in retirement states of Florida and Arizona.

A report from AARP shows from 2005 to 2009, the number of reported cases of syphilis and chlamydia among those age 55 and older increased 43% in Florida. It rose 87% among those 55 and older in Arizona.

What may be a problem in other states, may not spell trouble for Alabama.

"Any of the studies that you read or that you hear about will say there's much more propensity for it", Dr. Paul Roller, with Senior Care said.  Roller is a geriatrician of 14 years experience.
In that time he says, he has seen only one STD case. However, Roller says seniors and boomers should still be cautious.

"I do talk with them about that as well, if they're going to be at this level of relationship with their partners they need to discuss those things," says Roller.

Roller also warns his patients about the potential side effects of the drugs. The most common include hearing and vision loss. These effects are rare and are currently being studied by Dr. Gerald McGwin at UAB.

McGwin says, "These medications act on the tissues they were originally designed to impact but they also impact other parts of the body, so in addition to the work that we've done there's been a lot of basic science studies to understand what the exact mechanism of this relationship is."

McGwin also says despite the potential side effects, the good outweighs the bad.

"The absolute risk, the risk of any man coming down with these complications is exceedingly low, relative to the benefit they get from these drugs," says McGwin.
