Oxford City Council passes texting ban

By the middle of next week, Oxford's new ordinance banning text messaging while driving, will be in effect.

City council approved the measure Tuesday, with the full support of the police chief.  Under the new ordinance, an individual convicted of texting while driving can face a fine up to $500 or be sentenced to up to 30 days in jail.

Rep. Jim McClendon, of Springville, filed a bill in this legislative session that would ban texting while driving statewide.
