Maybe congress will find a way to keep middle class Americans from losing another $20 a week.
Between now and the end of the month, they must figure out how to keep the payroll tax cut. Monday, House Republican leaders decided to drop a key roadblock in passing a ten month extension. They will not require the cost of the extension to be covered by spending cuts in other places.
The President calls that encouraging, but he warned they should not to take any compromise for granted. "They need to do it now, without drama, without delay. No ideological sideshows to gum up the works, no self-inflicted wounds. Just pass this middle class tax cut, pass extension of unemployment insurance, do it before it's too late," President Obama said.
The tax cut and unemployment benefits affect about 160 million Americans.
