A new strain of hand, foot and mouth disease is spreading across the state. While it is still uncertain where it came from, Dr. John Simpson says some children are at a higher risk of catching the disease.
"It's a little different architecture of the virus, which means we may not have children especially may not have the same degree of immunity and there's such easy transmission that the virus gets spread more easily," Simpson says.
The virus typically affects children younger than five-years-old. It is spread through a variety of ways, including person to person contact, through bodily fluids, through surfaces that have been touched by infected persons. The virus can also be spread weeks after symptoms have subsided
The disease has several symptoms, including fever, rashes and sores on the hands feet and mouth.
Dr. Simpson says those sores on the mouth can lead to dehydration. "When the mouth is sore, there's lesions or sores in the mouth, if the child is running fever they don't feel well and when they don't feel well they typically don't feed well or drink well," Simpson says.
While there's no specific treatment for the disease, doctors say children should remain home until they have no fever. The disease can be prevented by taking simple steps like washing of the hands, disinfecting surfaces and avoiding close contact.
