Valentine's Day brings big bucks to retailers

Cupid is getting ready to shoot his arrow. Sixty percent of all Valentine's Day spending happens in the five days leading up to the holiday, according to recent consumer data. And that means lots of chocolate, jewelry and flowers add up to big bucks for retailers. In fact, Americans are expected to spend nearly $18 billion on gifts.

But some romantics, like Rebecca Stone, say it's not about the cash it's about the act of remembering your significant other.

"I don't think it's the gift itself. I think it is the spirit of giving and receiving," Stone says.

It's peak time for Bromberg's Fine Jewelry. Manager Terri Moore says they see a 10 percent sales jump leading up to Valentine's Day.

"We have a lot of people who get engaged at Valentine's Day because what's more romantic than getting a diamond on Valentine's Day," Moore says.

Some people, like Steven Glover, though, say they just haven't fallen for the holiday itself.

"I don't think its all it's cracked up to be if you love someone you should show them every day," Glover says.
