Corporal punishment, good or bad?

Posted: Updated:

Spare the rod, spoil the child... That is what a lot of people say.

It is not hard to find someone who uses corporal punishment, but how effective is it? Does spanking do more harm than good?

A study from Canadian Medical Association Journal says spanking can have adverse affects.
Researchers looked at several studies on the topic and found those who were physically punished had more mental health disorders and slower cognitive development.

However, for parents who were spanked when they were growing up, they see it differently.

"I was able to obey and understand right from wrong a lot better," Shelly O'Brien a mother of three said.

Dr. Vivian Friedman, a child psychologist at UAB says spanking isn't all bad. "I was spanked, you were spanked and neither one of us was terribly damaged," Dr. Friedman says. "I think that the best parents have a range of discipline, spanking is neither the first nor is it the last resort when they're out of patience."
