A high speed chase in Jefferson County ended when the driver plowed his vehicle into an officer's car. No one was hurt - the driver now faces multiple charges. But this accident- at least in part- had a happy ending.
The call went out to the Adamsville Police Department as a kidnapper hijacking a car headed down Highway 78. Five officers began the chase, but when they caught up to him, the story took a strange turn.
After a kidnapping call from state troopers went out, Adamsville officers chased after the blue Mercedes. But when the driver tried to make a fast u-turn....
"He tried to get away and collided with a police car," Chief Robert Carter, Adamsville Police said.
"They jumped out and cops started pulling up left and right and they were on top of the car with the guns on him," Chris Ashley, who saw the wreck, said. "The guy was just sitting in the car drinking booze."
"Somewhere in there there will be a DWI charge<" Chief Carter said. "He was drinking vodka."
Workers at the White Metro Electric company watched it all unfold. But as the suspect's car crashed into the Adamsville patrol car...
"The dog jumped out of the car and was in the highway," Mike White, Owner, Metro Electric said. "All of a sudden, it took off trying to get away from the accident, and went about two blocks up here and just sat."
Hoping to get the pup off the busy highway...
"We were more concerned about the dog than anything!" Ashley said.
The company owner took off after her.
"It's very nervous. It's really shaken up," Ashley said. "It was very intense. They tasered him, the dog jumps out of the car and my boss went up the hill to get her to make sure she didn't get run over."
They're not sure exactly who her owner is or why she was in the car...
"She's fine," White said. "I'm sure the owner will be glad she is safe."
Both the officers and the company owners told us that stretch of Highway 78 has been increasingly dangerous. Everything from fatal accidents, to high speed chases. The investigation is ongoing. Adamsville police say the suspect faces possible kidnapping, attempted murder, and dwi charges.
