Powerful 'Teaching' donation, yields powerful results in Akron

Posted: Updated:

Another big donation from Alabama Power to the 'Teach for America' program in Alabama is yielding some amazing results in the small town of Akron in Hale County.

The school got into the program because Alabama Power's Vice President of Human Resources, Donna Smith is a graduate of Akron.  Alabama Power donated $80, 000 to the statewide program.

Now, the High School has its first 'Teach for America' teacher.

Rebekah Wolfe literally run s a tight classroom inside a small portable at Akron High School.  Everything is time.  She works hard to keep students on the mark.

"I believe being a teacher is a lifestyle kind of thing, not a clock-in, clock-out kind of job," said Wolfe.

Alabama power says it contributes to the local program to help children grow and develop.  And students are doing just that.

Wolfe's degree is in Art, but she's teaching Geometry at Akron.   Students like Demarcus Morse are understanding like never before.  "Like angles.  I could never get it.  But, one day she made it a game on the board.  And now I know it by heart, " proclaimed Morse.

Donors such as Alabama Power say that's why they are committed to financially helping Teach For America.  "The only way our community's can grow and we can grow is if we can attract new industry and keep the ones we have," said Mark Crews.

Wolfe agrees.  "Talking to my friends that went through the traditional route and ended up being teachers I feel way more prepared.  I don't feel overwhelmed."
