Alabama Governor Robert Bentley once voted against a charter school bill when he was in the state legislature. But he says has never been against the idea of charter schools just that particular bill. Now Bentley and the Republican leadership will push charter school legislation in the upcoming session.
In fact, Bentley says charter schools plan could be a way to make sure every child in the state receives the best education. That's why the proposals would initially focus on underserved communities. Bentley and key state legislators believe charter schools would offer more flexibility and accountability.
But that's accountability in improving student achievement, and if a charter school fails to reach a goal, he says, it will close. But when it comes to teachers, in all schools, he wants to put more money back in their pockets when they buy school supplies.
"If you're a classroom teacher and you spend $300 in your classroom and you turn it in when you file your income taxes, every penny of that dollar will be given back to you," Bentley says.
Governor Bentley and House Speaker Mike Hubbard are committed to proposing these initiatives. But they acknowledge they expect some opposition when it comes to getting charter schools through the legislative session.
"We all have the same goal and that's to improve public education in every corner of Alabama. Now will there be naysayers like Governor Bentley says who will try to attack us? Absolutely," Hubbard says.
