It's no secret that drinking alcohol while you're pregnant can lead to birth defects. However, a new study is looking at when that damage tends to happen. Researchers looked at the drinking patterns of nearly a thousand pregnant women. They found that the second half of the first trimester tended to be the time most babies began developing signs of alcohol exposure, such as low weight and some head and facial characteristics.
Researchers say babies showing these signs were born to both heavy and light drinkers. They say the findings show no amount of alcohol is safe during pregnancy, from conception until birth. Study authors also surmise that alcohol exposure in the first six weeks of pregnancy, when may women don't know they are pregnant, may result in higher miscarriage rates, although the study did not include women who had miscarriages or stillbirth.
The study appeared online January 16, ahead of publication in the April print issue of the journal AlcoholismClinical & Experimental Research. Study authors say it is one of the first to examine the impact of quantity, frequency and timing of alcohol exposure on the condition.
