Volunteers from Connecticut, Maryland and Texas are working to rebuild Pratt City this week through Birmingham's Christian Service Mission's Pratt City Initiative, which aims to restore Pratt City through a partnership with Mt. Moriah Baptist Church.
"As long as there are people out there who need help, I believe it's part of our responsibility to live out the gospel in the community by mobilizing people to come out and work," said Christian Service Mission Executive Director Tracy Hipps.
More than 50 students from the University of Connecticut's Community Outreach Alternative Breaks, 34 students from Texas A&M's Wesleyan Foundation, and 35 volunteers from the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Damascus, Maryland, are part of the project.
The volunteers are working to restore four Pratt City houses.
"This is what we're called to do: called to reach out to people," said Texas A&M student Lane Jurden. "And so doing what God calls us to do is always time well spent."
The volunteers from Texas will work through Wednesday, and the Connecticut and Maryland teams will work through Friday.
