Experts put finishing touches on Pratt City rebuilding plan

Posted: Updated:

A national team of experts spent the weekend developing a long-term recovery strategy for the Pratt City community.

Nine experts assembled by the American Institute of Architects listened to residents' concerns Friday and plan to reveal a final report Monday evening.

"We were up until after midnight last night, and we will probably be there until then tonight," said Seattle architect Bert Gregory.

Plans include possible walking trails, bike paths, and new buildings. Experts are also addressing housing concerns both before and after April's deadly storm. Twisted trees and empty, damaged homes still plague the community.

"It'll never be the same," said resident James Perry who has lived in the Pratt City community long enough to raise 12 grandchildren. "But, I'd like for it to be...but, at my age, I'll never see it."

The American Institute of Architects has worked in more than 200 communities to bring together architects and other professionals to provide roadmaps for communities looking to improve sustainability.

"We want this vision to come from the people that live there and work there and are part of the Pratt community," added Gregory.

In a news release, Mayor William Bell said: "This is a critical step in rebuilding these communities and for the City of Birmingham. We look forward to working with them and hearing from the communities and then the AIA's recommendation and plan."
