Marissa Mitchell - ABC 33/40 - Birmingham News, Weather, Sports

Marissa Mitchell

Marissa Mitchell is an anchor/reporter at ABC 33/40. She anchors the Midday News every Monday, and serves as a primary fill-in host for "Talk of Alabama." During the week, Marissa covers Birmingham City Hall.

A true self-starter, Marissa has reported on major local and national stories. In Alabama, she's covered stories ranging from the memorial service of civil rights icon Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth to the two-year anniversary of the deadly April 27, 2011 tornadoes. Marissa challenges herself to find good "people stories." In fact, Marissa's profile of an Alabama woman's 15-year search to find her birth family led to that family's reunion. She also covered high-profile sports stories, including the removal of the famed Toomer's Oaks at Auburn University and the University of Alabama's 2012 win at the BCS National Championship Game in New Orleans.

The Atlanta native got her start in television at WTVC in Chattanooga, TN. Before starting her career, she obtained her Master's degree in broadcast journalism from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism. There, she attended the program on a full-tuition McCormick Scholarship, while also completing a media management sequence at the Kellogg School of Management. Marissa was also one of ten students at the school to complete the News21 Fellowship sponsored by the Carnegie and Knight Foundations. Her Bachelor's degree is in political science and journalism from Atlanta's Emory University.

Marissa's love for news started early on. While attending Dunwoody High School, she co-hosted a morning news show. Since then, videos she shot and produced have been featured on CNN.com, NBC Universal's TheGrio.com, WCIU-TV and other outlets. She interned with FOX5 Atlanta, Crossroads News newspaper and Allied Advertising. Marissa is a member of the National Association of Black Journalist (NABJ) and the Online News Association. The Atlanta chapter of NABJ honored Marissa with a first place scholarship in 2006. In 2013, Marissa was named a finalist for the NABJ Salute to Excellence Awards for her general assignment reporting.

Marissa likes to travel, dance and watch movies. She also loves to mentor young girls, and has hosted numerous conferences on self-esteem. Marissa served as the host for the 2013 Jazz in the Park concert series in Birmingham. If you see her out, feel free to say hello and share your story ideas!
