BIRMINGHAM - AL -

The new law required coaches for all ages be educated about concussions. Parents and students are required to sign paper stating that they read and understand information about concussions.

The reason behind this new law is to protect the players. Doctors say it is imperative that coaches, players and parents know the signs of a concussion. If a player shows signs of a concussion they must be pulled from play. They will not be allowed to return, until they are properly evaluated by a doctor and given written permission to return to play. The reason behind these new rules is that researchers found the second impact on the brain can do more severe damage, if the brain is not allowed to rest and repair.

If you have not heard about the new law, you can contact Children's Hospital. They have concussion clinics to help the public and coaches stay informed.
