"Please tell she's not in there," says a woman looking on as Alabaster Police investigate the deaths of an 8-month-old baby and her 24-year-old mother at the Shelby Motor Lodge. "Is she in there? Just please tell me. Let me know, please!"
This woman says the oldest victim is her cousin, and others say the baby was born prematurely. Alabaster Police believe both the mother and the daughter died from multiple stab wounds at the hands of 34-year-old Terrace Paul Patterson.
"Anytime there is a murder it's tragic," says Deputy Chief Curtis Rigney, "but when you're talking about a baby, a defenseless child. It's unspeakable."
Unspeakable and hard to believe because relatives say Patterson is the father of the baby he is accused of killing, and the mother also leaves behind a two-year-old girl.
Alabaster Police have charged Patterson with capital murder, and they are still working on a motive, to answer the one question out of many that these relatives may have right now.. Why would a father kill his own child?
"We're still very early in the investigation," Rigney says. "We talked to a few witnesses. We've got a lot to do. We don't have a lot of details right now."
One woman told us that Patterson lived at the Motor Lodge alone, and that the woman brought the baby to see him. Alabaster Police would not confirm or deny the relationship between the three.
