In 2003, Isaiah moved back to Birmingham to help his mother, "Mattie" battle breast cancer. She lost the fight in March 2006. Since then, Isaiah's become an advocate for breast cancer research. "My mother gave the ugly disease a really good fight and I was inspired by her amazing strength. I encourage anyone afflicted to give it your best."

He was bitten by the communications bug while traveling to other colleges across the southeast to compete in Informative and Persuasive Speaking and Literature Interpretation.
