Metro Birmingham, Ala. - *Video will be shown Tuesday night at 10:00 on ABC 33/40 News and again Wednesday morning during Good Morning Alabama. The video will also be uploaded on this site Wednesday morning.*
Crime Stoppers detectives are looking for anonymous tips to help them identify and arrest suspects in two dangerous robberies. The first case is another late-night Winn Dixie robbery. The second case is a Subway restaurant robbery. Details are below.
Winn Dixie Robbery: The latest in a series of grocery store holdups took place Friday night, November 27, in Cahaba Heights.
Surveillance video shows a gunman wearing a distinctive hooded jacket and "Family Guy" pajama bottoms. The man forced Winn Dixie employees and customers into the back room of the store. Video shows the man taking thousands of dollars from the store's safe.
It is unclear whether the robber is the same man seen in other late-night Winn Dixie robberies in Birmingham, Helena, Clanton, and Pinson. Authorities said 16 robberies, all similar in nature, have taken place since the summer of 2008.
"We need somebody that's going to be able to tell us who this guy is," Sergeant James Lewis said. "He was covered up, but somebody knows that this guy went in there and did this."
"If he's a part of the little clique that's out there doing this, we need all of these guys," Lewis added. "So somebody needs to give us the information on who this guy is."
Detectives said the robber(s) have probably bragged about the crimes, and anyone who has heard about who is behind the crimes should provide an anonymous tip.
Crime Stoppers can take tips at (205) 254-7777. Lewis also encouraged anyone who sees suspicious activity at a Winn Dixie store, particularly just before closing time, to call 911 immediately.
Subway Robbery: Surveillance images from the Subway restaurant on Dennison Avenue in Birmingham show a man who emptied the cash register and ran off on Monday evening, November 30.
The man had posed as a customer and even went to the bathroom before the robbery, apparently to make sure no other customers were around.
The video is very clear, and detectives are sure someone will immediately be able to identify the robber.
"He may get bold enough to think, 'Okay, I got away with it one time. I can do it again,'" Lewis said. "Next time he may have a gun."
"He's probably local to that area," Lewis added. "So hopefully somebody will know who this guy is."
As in the Winn Dixie case, anyone with information on the Subway robbery can reach Crime Stoppers at (205) 254-7777. Also, encrypted tips can be sent online by going to www.birminghamcrimestoppers.org and clicking on the "submit an online tip" link.
Detectives will give each caller a private code number, meaning callers will never be asked for their names. If an arrest is made based on an individual's tip, the caller then uses the code number to claim a cash reward. Crime Stoppers cannot call tipsters to testify, meaning callers will never have to appear in court.
