Fairfield, AL - One parent is dead and 10 children are hurt after a woman plows them over with her car. It happened shortly after dismissal Friday outside Forest Hills Middle School in Fairfield.
The parent died while in surgery at UAB. As of late Friday evening, some students were still listed in serious condition and most of them are being treated at Children's Hospital. To some relief, at least 2 students were treated and released from Princeton Hospital.
"The lady started at the flag pole and she just came speeding and she hit at least 10 kids," says Jasmine Wright, student.
Fairfield Police say a 67 year-old woman, driving a black Chevy Cobalt, picked up her grandson after school. With him in the car, police say she somehow lost control and went barreling down the campus road hitting child after child along a 50 ft. stretch.
"I was scared because I saw my little sister down there," says Keshaunia Frazier, witness.
Officials say most of the injured students were 6th graders. They had a party Friday and they were dismissed first.
"I was scared I was going to cry because they're my friends," says Kaniya Smith, witness.
"When I first got the reports from my office, it was, it was not a good feeling. Get that sick feeling in the pit of your stomach," says Kevin Sutton, Fairfield Fire Chief.
Police have never called this a hit and run and they've confirmed no drugs or alcohol were involved. The woman's car has been towed and it will be checked out for any malfunctions. So, for right now, they say they are investigating a terrible accident. Investigators also say it's too early to say whether the woman will face any charges.
A school resource officer will provide counseling for students next week.
