Birmingham, AL - The judge over Jefferson County's occupational tax dispute says the time has come for taxpayers to get their money.
Judge David Rains ordered attorneys to work together developing a strategy to repay about $48 million. They will use a claims administrator to manage the refunds.
Attorneys disagree over whether to issue refunds directly to employees or to their employers for them to distribute.
Attorney for the county, Bill Slaughter, says he is willing to transfer to the money from an escrow account to the claims administrator as long as attorneys do not issue refunds without the judge's approval.
Taxpayers attorneys want the refunds sent out by early next year. Rains called that overly ambitious.
