Dora, Ala. - A home invasion by people looking for puppies led to the assault of an elderly woman who had to be rushed to the hospital.

It happened on the Jefferson County side of Dora November 5.  The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said the elderly woman lived with a relative who had recently advertised Yorkshire Terrier puppies for sale.  The dogs were valued at $600 each.

Detectives said the breeder had received calls inquiring about when prospective buyers could look at the puppies.  The home invasion took place at a time in which the breeder had said she would not be at home.

Instead, the elderly relative was home when the invaders stormed in.  The elderly victim received broken bones as the invaders pushed her out of the way and stole five puppies.

Crime Stoppers is asking for anonymous tips from anyone who might be able to identify the culprits.

"If someone has approached you on selling a Yorkie puppy, please give us a call, because one of those five puppies is going to lead us back to someone who was the person who assaulted the grandmother and broke into these people's house," Lieutenant Bill Musgrove said.

The elderly victim was recovering at last update.  Deputies said the case serves as a reminder for the public to be careful about telling strangers when people will not be at home.

If you have information that could lead detectives to a suspect, you can call Crime Stoppers anonymously at (205) 254-7777.  Also, encrypted tips can be submitted by going to www.birminghamcrimestoppers.org and clicking on the "submit an online tip" link.

If you provide information to Crime Stoppers, you will never be asked for your name.  Instead, detectives will assign you a private code number.  If your tip leads to an arrest, you can then use the code number to claim a cash reward, and detectives still will not ask for your name.

Crime Stoppers is a partnership between local law enforcement, the Birmingham Business Alliance and ABC 33/40.  Together, our goal is to make our community a safer place to live and work.
