Birmimgham, AL -
Delta Sigma Theta hosted a Birmingham Mayoral Forum at Huffman High School Tuesday night. 11 of the 14 candidates showed up.
"I like having so many candidates," says candidate Harry "Traveling Shoes" Turner, Jr., "because it puts the- not the pressure- but the accountability level high for the person that's going to be running that office."
This forum allows voters to compare the candidates side-by-side.
"I think they just want some leadership, and to empower them with knowledge is crucial and this is a great event for that to happen," says candidate Jason Sumners.
The candidates bring much of the same concerns to the table.
"Birmingham, the safety, the cleanness, education, transportation and bringing jobs here," says candidate Emory Anthony, Jr. Candidates Scott Douglas, Stephanie Huey and Edith Mayomi say they campaigns focus on those topics as well. Jody Trautwein challenged the crowd to unite and as his campaign slogan goes, to "awaken the dream."
There are a number of familiar faces like Patrick Cooper (who came in second in the last race), City Councilor Stephen Hoyt and Jefferson County Commissioner William Bell.
"When you look at the African American males in the inner city here," Cooper told the crowd, "you got an unemployment rate that's above 65%. That's unacceptable, and it's immoral."
"William Bell has faithfully, faithfully carried out his responsibility to attend not just to the needs of students at Huffman, but all our children," Bell told the crowd about his record.
But some believe Birmingham is ready for something new.
"Birmingham just had a black eye for too long, and it's time for us to have the positive image that the world needs to see," says candidate Jimmy Snow.
Voters will have to decide who best fits the bill on December 8, 2009.
