Pell City, AL - Finding strength in each other, neighbors, friends, and relatives of Barry Bush gathered Saturday night for a candlelight vigil to remember the life of Bush and pray that someone would soon shed some light on his death. Bush was killed Thursday at his home in the Shadydale Mobile Home Park in Pell City. He was shot in what was supposed to be a routine search warrant. It's an incident that has many members of the community shocked, outraged and angry.
"Everything that was done in the dark will come to the light," says the organizer of the vigil.
70 people attended the vigil including Bush's mother.
"I need closure so I can go on," says Ann Bush, victim's mother.
41 year-old Bush was killed in his home as Pell City officers tried to serve a search warrant for drugs.
"They didn't find no drugs cause he didn't have any. He wasn't no big drug dealer. He wasn't no kingpin," says Ann Bush.
And that's why Bush's relatives are confident police went to the wrong house, a house they say Bush moved into 3 months ago.
"He was just a sweet person and he minded his business," says Carla Estell, victim's sister.
" Everybody loved him. He would give you the shirt off his back," says Ann Bush.
Because of his recent back surgery , they also say Bush was very sick and weak. They say he was recovering from a bad staph infection. So the thought of resisting arrest...
"Not almost. It was impossible," says Ann Bush.
So Saturday night's tears are out of sadness but they're also out of a desire for justice.
"Justice. I am not going to give up. I don't care where I have to take it. He going to pay for what he done," says Ann Bush.
Ann Bush has hired at attorney to look into her son's death.
The officer involved in the shooting was treated at a St. Clair County hospital and is currently on paid administrative leave. The case in now being handled by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation.
