Birmingham - City Councilman Steven Hoyt has joined the race for Birmingham mayor. Hoyt recently was re-elected without a runoff to the District 8 seat. Now the City Council Economic Development Committee chairman wants to lead the city focusing on economic growth across the city.
Hoyt cited the on-going redevelopment of the Alabama Fairgrounds in his district as an example of what the city can and should do.
State Representative Mary Moore will not run for mayor. A grass roots organization attempted to draft her into the race, but Moore said she will return the Legislature in January with a bill to amend Birmingham's Mayor-Council Act. The bill would lengthen the time needed to qualify for an election from 21 days before election day to 45 days. Moore has proposed a Vice-Mayor's position , voted by the electorate, that would fill out the mayor's term if the chief executive's seat is vacated.
