Hoover - A conference at a Hoover church sparked a debate about sexual orientation.
Members of the gay community silently demonstrated near the Metro Church of God. Inside the church, former gay men and lesbian women spoke to parents of homosexual children about "praying out the gay."
"Part of our message is if someone is dissatisfied living homosexually because it isn't genetic, it is something that can be overcome," explained Melissa Fryrear, the conference speaker who says she used to be a lesbian.
Protesters countered that people should look past sexual orientations.
"Homosexuality is not a choice but people can choose to love and accept people for who they are, not why they want them to be," said Wayne Besen.
Both groups say there is scientific research to back their arguments.
