Oxford, AL - Clean out your attic and look for hidden treasures tucked away in your closet. A team of appraisers is in Calhoun County this week and they're prepared to pay cash for your coins, antiques and other collectables. It's called the "Great Treasure Hunt" where those coins or baseball cards sitting around the house can be traded for cash. But are there really deals to be found here? David Anderson drove from Piedmont to find out.
He says, "I had some items that we had passed down from time to time in our family and we just thought we'd come down and go treasure hunting."
A team of appraisers will determine what his clock is worth.
Justin Kurkis is one of them. He explains, "We're looking for anything of value. We buy gold, silver, sports memorabillia, vintage instruments things like that."
They use apprasal books and the internet to assess fair market value.
Kurkis adds, "You can bring anything down and if it's not something we're interested in we'll tell you but if it is something we're interested in we'll make you an offer and pay you cash on the spot."
Coins and musical instruments are the most common items purchased but check your attic because people bring in other items too and you never know what has value. One woman walked away with four hundred dollars for a Rolex. Her grandmother found it years ago on the ground.
Anderson wasn't so lucky. His items weren't worth what he'd hoped, but he says, "These young men have been very helpful. They gave us some background info on the items that we bought and we enjoyed it."
The treasure hunt continues at Baymont Inn and Suites in Oxford through Saturday. Next week it travels to Tuscaloosa.
