Eutaw, AL - State Fire Marshalls were back at Greene County High School on Monday to start a criminal investigation. The say the fire inside a classroom of the main building was intentionally set and now they're looking for an 'arsonist'. The blaze broke out Monday evening around 5:30 pm, while police say Basketball Players were praticing inside the gymnasium and noticed the smoke. Eutaw's Assistant Police Chief Luther Davis tells ABC 3340, "We do not have any suspects yet in this investigation." That was in response to questions of whether an outside surveillance camera right above the burned classroom picked up the activity. Davis decline to comment. But, sources tell ABC 33-40 the camera was not aimed in direction of the scene. We've also learned, according to sources -- some sort of bottle was thrown into the classroom which may have aided the suspect in setting the classroom ablaze. However, state fire officials have not released a cause. Monday night Chief Davis said, "It could have been much worse had it gone on undetected." The classroom was charred. A couple of other classrooms suffered water damage. The entire building was smoked. Classes resumed Monday on a modified block schedule . The building where the classroom burned remained closed for cleaning. Classes were held in the school's gymnasium and vocational buildings out back. All 413 students had to be bussed to another school for lunch periods. School officials say they hope to have the building ready for learning again by the end of the week.
