Midfield, AL -
Midfield city employees may lose their health insurance coverage if the city can't come up with nearly $150,000 by the end of the month. The State Employee's Insurance Board sent the city a letter late last week outlining $101,444 in money that has not been paid since August. The letter also says premiums of $42,912 for November are due before October 31st. If the balances aren't paid, health insurance coverage will be canceled back to the last month paid and all claim payments after that date will be suspended. This means, the city and its employees would then be responsible for all claim payments after the cancellation date. Midfield Mayor Gary Richardson says, "As of right now I don't have the true picture of this. But I know anytime something like that has allegedly happened it's not good and I do realize I am the mayor and the buck stops with me. and I am going to find out what's gone on here and whatever the problem is, we are going to correct it." City Clerk Cedric Brown has been placed on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of an internal investigation. Mayor Richardson will meet with the city council in a special executive session Tuesday night at 6 p.m. to discuss the matter.
