BOISE STATE: The Broncos were shut out in the second half on Saturday, but
luckily the squad posted 24 points in the second quarter to go on and claim a
24-7 win over Southern Miss on the road. Once again Kellen Moore led 15th-
ranked BSU with three scoring passes on 21-of-30 passing. In addition to the
170 yards produced by Moore through the air, the Broncos added another 180
yards on 34 rushing attempts, helping the squad overcome nine penalties for a
loss of 89 yards. Now that BSU's non-conference schedule has run its course,
the Broncos get back to matters in the WAC with a meeting against Hawaii at
home on Friday night. Last season, the Warriors picked up a 39-27 win at home
in the final regular season game for the Broncos, a defeat that also left the
home team with the conference title. Overall, Boise State has taken six of the
previous nine games against Hawaii, dating back to 1996.
FRESNO STATE: The Bulldogs scored in every quarter on Saturday night, allowing
them to hold on for a 45-32 win against the Idaho Vandals at home. Tom
Brandstater completed 14-of-23 tosses for just 125 yards, but he had two
passing scores for a program that rolled up 318 yards on the ground. Lonyae
Miller picked up a game-high 181 yards on 15 carries, scoring on a 90-yard run
in the third quarter. Although the defense looked a bit defeated at times,
Seyi Ajirotutu gave the group a lift when he recovered a fumble in the end
zone for a touchdown in the second frame. The Bulldogs now enjoy their second
bye of the 2008 campaign and won't be back in action until October 25th when
they drop in on Utah State at Romney Stadium in Logan.
HAWAII: Inoke Funaki threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as he led
the Warriors to a 24-14 win against the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs at home on
Saturday night. Funaki finished the contest 14-of-26 for 224 yards and was
picked off once by the Bulldogs, a squad that allowed just over 400 yards of
total offense to the host team. Just as important, the Hawaii defense managed
to come away with four turnovers, two interceptions and a pair of fumble
recoveries as well. The Warriors have a short week this time around, heading
back onto the field on Friday night for a special WAC event versus Boise State
in Idaho. Hawaii trails in the all-time series by a count of 6-3 and has come
up empty in all three games on the blue turf. However, last season the
Warriors defeated BSU at home in Honolulu by a score of 39-27, snapping a six-
game slide to the Broncos dating back to 2001.
IDAHO: Nathan Enderle finished 22-of-39 passing versus the Fresno State
defense, accounting for 237 yards and three touchdowns without an interception
on Saturday, yet the visiting Vandals still fell to the Bulldogs in a 45-32
decision. Averaging better than five yards per carry, Deonte' Jackson chipped
in with 93 yards and a score for the Idaho offense, as the team posted 215
yards rushing overall in the setback. This week the Vandals suit up against
the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs on the road, with the following three games for
Idaho being played at home in Moscow before the regular-season finale versus
Hawaii on November 22nd in Honolulu.
LOUISIANA TECH: Myke Compton recovered a fumble in the end zone on Saturday
versus Hawaii, while Patrick Jackson added another scoring run, but it simply
wasn't enough for the Bulldogs as they bowed to the Warriors at Aloha Stadium
by a score of 24-14. Quarterback Taylor Bennett and Ross Jenkins combined to
hit just 15-of-38 passes for 167 yards, with the former being picked off twice
in the losing effort. LaTech lost the contest despite seeing the home team
flagged 13 times for a loss of 127 yards. This coming weekend the Bulldogs
make their way back to Ruston to face off against the Idaho Vandals in WAC
action. Louisiana Tech doesn't catch a break the rest of the 2008 campaign,
playing straight through until the finale versus Nevada in Reno on November
29th.
NEVADA: Quarterback Colin Kaepernick threw for three touchdowns and ran for
another, yet his efforts failed to get the Wolf Pack into the won column as
the team bowed to New Mexico State in Reno on Saturday by a score of 48-45.
Kaepernick converted 15-of-26 attempts for 194 yards and was intercepted once
in the offensive explosion. Running back Vai Taua, the hero the last game for
Nevada, contributed a game-high 188 yards and scored twice himself on the
ground in the setback, one that saw the Pack generate a whopping 313 yards
rushing on 42 opportunities. This weekend the Wolf Pack entertain the Utah
State Aggies in a WAC event at Mackay Stadium in Reno. Nevada holds a 14-4
advantage in the all-time series entering this season and held on to defeat
USU in last year's meeting, 31-28, in Logan.
NEW MEXICO STATE: Chase Holbrook threw for 409 yards and three touchdowns as
he helped the Aggies slip by Nevada on the road on Saturday, 48-45. Holbrook,
who was picked off once, completed 28-of-47 chances but also got substantial
assistance from running back Marquell Colston as he posted 118 yards and a
score in the victory. Although the NMSU defense surrendered more than 500
yards of total offense to the Wolf Pack, the squad also forced three
turnovers, while the Aggies' offense was guilty of just one miscue on the day.
The schedule shows the Aggies playing San Jose State at Aggie Memorial Stadium
this week. SJSU, which claimed a lopsided 51-17 win last year, has taken all
but two of the 15 meetings in the series with NMSU. The most recent win for
the Aggies against SJSU came in 1994 and by only three points (24-21).
SAN JOSE STATE: Quarterback Kyle Reed threw for an even 300 yards and three
touchdowns to lead the Spartans to a convincing 30-7 win against Utah State on
Saturday in California. Reed completed 28-of-40 passes, while defender Duke
Ihenacho added to the scoring with a 43-yard interception return for a
touchdown in the second quarter as the Spartans put up 30 unanswered points.
The only issue for San Jose State came in the running game where it posted
just 87 yards on 29 attempts, with Yonus Davis being the top producer with a
mere 24 yards on 11 carries. The Spartans hit the road for a WAC matchup this
weekend against the New Mexico State Aggies at Aggie Memorial Stadium. Thanks
in part to a 51-17 triumph in last year's affair, SJSU now holds a 13-2
advantage in the all-time series.
UTAH STATE: The Aggies managed just 71 yards rushing and another 119 yards
through the air as they fell to San Jose State in conference action on
Saturday. Diondre Borel connected on 8-of-21 passes for 66 yards and Sean
Setzer a mere 5-of-9 for 53 yards and a score, but the former was also picked
off twice, one of which was returned for a touchdown in the 30-7 setback.
Borel also accounted for a team-high 43 yards rushing, but a portion of that
was nullified by Setzer who was brought down for a combined loss of 13 yards.
Against one of the more aggressive offenses in the WAC these days, Utah State
has a date this weekend against the pistol offense of the Nevada Wolf Pack.
Last season, the Aggies gave Nevada a scare, but in the end the Pack survived
in a 31-28 decision. With the triumph, Nevada now leads the series by a count
of 13-4 according to Utah State records.
