Birmingham, AL - Some Jefferson County students aren't just-getting a workout in their P.E. classes.. They're also getting a lesson.. in heart-health. The fifth-graders... at bryan-elementary... now have heart-rate monitors.. as part of a larger wellness program called "healthy-eating - active-living." ABC 33-40's ..Melissa Riopka.. shows-us how the program works.     "Alright, boys and girls, today we're are going to be using our heart rate monitors."   At least twice a week.. these fifth-grade P.E. students at Bryan Elementary.. set their heart rate monitors... before working up a sweat.   Heather Bertrand, Bryan Elementary P.E. Teacher said, "We are really looking to reduce the obesity level in our state and in our students, and we're using the heart rate monitors to do that."   As students move through six fitness stations -- skipping.. curling.. and climbing -- they try to keep their heart rate in their "target range."   "Let's see if we are in our 140 to 170 healthy heart zone. Teachers keep the classes fun.. with music...   "Celebration plays while children exercise." And motivation...   "Come on you guys, keep it up, keep it up." For the students.. there's more at stake here.. than they probably realize. "Experts are currently predicting that the current generation will be the first generation in the history of this country with a shorter life span than their parents." And.. as childhood obesity rates continue to rise.. the goal at this school is to develop an appreciation for exercise that will last long after the students leave fifth grade.   Currently.. -eight- Jefferson County schools are part of the "healthy-eating - active-living" program. The system hopes-to-expand the program to -14-schools.
