A lot of young people dream of becoming a rock star. For the members of "Switchfoot", that dream became a reality.
But instead of the usual parties and celebrity perks, members of the band are talking about helping those in need instead of just meeting their own needs.
Drew Shirley/Guitarist. "I found myself doing music all my life which is the best job in the world so you can't complain."
Drew Shirley, guitarist for "Switchfoot" , tells me he played music in high school then college. Then he launched a career in music.
Drew says, "We want to lead by example we want people to see us there doing things involved passionate excited. It is so good so fullfilling. "
Recently while Drew was in Birmingham, I got a chance to talk to him back stage.
Drew told me, "Our faith is who we are, it's a massive thing hard to describe in one interview... But one aspect of that is to value other people and to love them for who they are. "
That faith and that desire to help others has led to two mission projects. The band members enjoy working on the projects together.
Drew. " We visited South Africa Capetown Johannesburg...
Aids and orphans more.... We worked with it was real impacting for us yeah.
The other mission is to help build homes through Habitat for Humanity.
Drew. " With Habitat we found satisfaction that's visual that you can see . That you can leave behind. And come back to visit in years to come. "
Drew. "We want to do something more than just one night of music, with each city that we travel to. We want to leave an impression is what we're doing going to help other people... Ultimatly we want to bring hope to the hopeless. "
Their desire to help others is clearly reflected in their music.
Drew. A song called dare you to move and it's a song about motivating yourself to get up and change yourself and therefore change the world.
