Cars zooming around Talladega Motor Speedway were not the only ones burning major fuel this weekend. A sea of spectator's RVs lined the fields surrounding the track.
"I think we got gas in Birmingham and we'll probably have to get gas twice on the way back," said Debbie Clement who traveled six hours from Brownsville, TN.
With gas shortages still lingering around the southeast, some worried an event drawing huge crowds like Talladega could dry up the pumps once again.
"They call us and take readings to see what our gas levels are at two and three times a day to make sure that we're not going to run out of gas," said gas station manager Elena Roman.
She says her station went to extra lengths, getting deliveries everyday this weekend. But she says the gas scare actually hurt their race weekend business.
"Normally, people wait until they get here to gas up their generators and use that extra gas for whatever they need but we have not seen that this time around," Roman said.
While the prices were up quite a bit from the $2.69 state average, there was still gas. It's good news for Roman who hopes to make up for lost business with people heading home.
"I think they're going to stop and gas up because the same things happens when they travel down the road they don't know what gas stations have gas and what gas stations don't have gas."
