School children currently visit Shirley Place to learn about the history of Northport.
Now the city wants to expand, with the Heritage Learning Center planned on property behind Shirley Place. The center, funded through a state grant and local funds, will focus on the history of Tuscaloosa County and also provide space for lectures, archive research and special exhibits.
Local historians hope tahe site soon will expand into something more - a learning center focusing on the history of West Alabama.
The center will have regular lectures and speakers and will have archived documents and oral history recordings.
