A Tuscaloosa County family is mourning the loss of a much-loved grandfather and his grandson. The two men died in a fire that broke out around 11 o'clock Thursday night at the home they shared at 12211 Poole Road near Duncanville.
Relatives have identified the victims as 83-year-old Foster E. Poole and his 25-year-old grandson, John Foster Poole. The younger Poole had been staying with his grandfather for the last few months.
A number of family members live on the same road and were the first to see the flames. While they waited for firefighters to arrive, they did their best to save the two men. Jimmy Poole, the son of Foster Poole and uncle of John Poole, said, "we tried to break the back door down, but there wasn't no getting in there."
The Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office and State Fire Marshal are investigating. However, based on initial conclusions, it appears the fire was accidental. Jimmy Poole said the family was told it may have been electrical in nature.
