Two new technologies are working into consumer electronics, and may result in big improvments.
Microsoft has come up with BlueTrack- an improvement on the technology behind optical mice. BlueTrack uses a newer type of laser to provide the light picked up by the sensor inside the mouse. It also casts a wider beam than most optical mice. BlueTrack also uses a newer type of sensor, whcih allows the mouse to track on surfaces many optical mice just can't handle.
OLED (Organic Light emitting Diode) technology may improve displays on everything from cell phones to flat screen TVs. OLEDs are similar to LCDs, but are brighter with bettr contrast. LCD screens use one layer to produce light, and another to produce images. OLEDs use a single layer that makes the image and makes its own light. The big drawbacks to OLED are higher price and shorter lifespan. OLEDs may eventually replace LCDs in many electronics.
