I wish the best for her in whatever she does. I know we need someone in here to clean our city up from all the violence we have here.

I am not going to cut her down, she is a good Christian woman, but was not cut out for the job of Police Chief, she did not being in the public, and that is part of the job, and she was clueless in how to get crime down, was ready for her to leave. I know someone who is Chief of another department that i think would be good, but do not know if he is interested. Just hope whoever it is will be an out front open strong leader who will lead as well as discipline those who need to be, have a plan for getting crime down and get the job done that has not been being done in the last few years. Whatever happened to 'zero tolerance' and 'teen curfews', need those back.

WELL I hate to see anyone loose their job but at least she is close to retirment anyway. I think we now need someone from outside to be chief and stand up for the officers and let them "POLICE" the way it needs to be done. We need someone that is not afraid to tell the local politians to stay out of the affairs of the BPD. I think we need someone that will stand up with the officers and back them up and not just be worried about their job. If an officer pulls over someone for a offense and they are related to someone in politics in B'ham it should not matter, let them get what they deserve. Also, you need to pay more to get better officers. I think if the system would quit letting out repeat offenders you would see crime go down. I bet if you pulled most of the regular criminals in B'hams records they would be as long as your arm. That is not the officers fault, it is the lawyers and Judges. Let the time for offenses increase with fines and you would see it go down and not be a revolving door. Please Larry get a chief that is worthy and not one like the former-not former-former chief of Fairfield. They do not have to be like Hitler but a lot tougher on crime and care more for the victim than the perp.

First: GOOD! I have been waiting for the day. I have a feeling that Langford and Nunn were not at a loss for love of one another. I still don't trust Langford, but I watched his interviews over the past day or so, and I got the very distinct impression that he had no intention of keeping Nunn in place nor did he want her in place. At this point, it's a good thing that she's stepping down.

Second: I can not and I will not defend this woman in any way, shape form or fashion. Her actions and her leadership ability, her lack of tenacity, all have been to the detriment of the entire city as well as the entire police force.

She may be a nice person, she may be a good Christian, but she is incompetent as far as running a police department. I've heard her speak on many occasion and just from what I've heard, she's not capable now, nor at any time in the past, of executing the post of chief of police to the fullest extent needed, in order to be effective.

While I think it's definitely an obstacle removed, it doesn't yet mean that better things will take place or that a more capable, more aggressive person will fill this spot.

Now we have to wait and see. And hope for the best.

I'm with curvygirl on this one. How easy we forget the total of 13 kilo's of cocaine that ended up "missing" from Birmingham police's possession in the mid 90's. First time it was 7 kilo's that somehow never got reported and placed into evidence and went "missing" from a certain officers personal locker at North precinct. It became missing alright!! Right to the streets. Then when the domestic violence bill was passed a lot of Birmingham's finest couldn't work on patrol due to the fact they were no longer allowed by law to carry firearms! Add in the numerous other happenings since then like officers being accused of rape, robbery, road rage, and even recieving stolen property. And who can forget the officer who robbed a drug dealer of 20k cash and a handgun and was caught when the dealer went to the cops over it! It isn't as bad as New Orleans but this is how New Orleans police department started getting to be the most corrupt department in the country. We need someone who is from outside of the department to come clean it up and think "outside of the box" in ways to fight crime. I don't give a rats rear end if they are black, white, or pink. As long as they produce RESULTS they will gain the respect of the people back. Also being the biggest city in the state they should pay the highest for officers willing to work for them. The tax base is there to support it so long as it isn't wasted on other needless crap like a dome stadium. Why would an officer work for 25k a year and get shot at and have a crappy work place when Hoover will start them out at 42k a year? The math is simple. More pay will keep better police on the streets. A better chief will reduce crime. And we all know we need crime reduced in the "ham" in a bad way...

overrated
There IS a GOD!!!!! I'm with Justalittlebit...race isn't an issue - get someone in there that belives in a better Birmingham...someone who will make it their top priority to getting the job done. I'm sorry folks, prayers arn't going to do it. What we need is action!

Good Duhnetta is leaving, wow what a nice picture they put on this story of her. You could stop a train with that photo. I hope leisure suit Larry doesn't put in another one just like her. Please get someone with a brain for crime fighting, not making gospel cds.

csxtman
let her ass leave now?? i dont see how in the heck she ever got the job in the first place?? oh i know how but i wont go there today. what a joke,,,,lol,,,another waste of time on the newscasters page. GOOD RIDDANCE!!!!

I Love Da Ham
I feel bad for her, whatever her reasons are for leaving. I also strongly believe the city needs to replace her with someone that will dedicate themselves to reducing crime on the streets, and within the police force. Birmingham really needs someone that will use crime fighting methods and equipment that has been proven in other cities where crime resembles the types commited here. The uniforms could use an upgrade too. To sum this all up, this city needs a police chief that will demand city officials to supply them with the equipment, manpower, and support needed.

In Birmingham, RACE is the issue! Wake up! A black can still use the race and civil rights card every day in this, the 21st Century to get whatever they want! They are right when they say the RACE thing isn't dead and will never die because they won't let it. Do some good with your extra opportunities Dr King fought for and clean up your own communities! I am sure they are the same people who don't know that 87 percent of the violent and drug crimes committed in the Birmingham metro area are committed by 30X of the population which so happens to black!!!!! Thank God for people such as Condaleeza Rice, Denzel Washington, MOrgan Freeman, Martin Luther King, JR and George Washington Carver!

JUSTALITTLEBIT
I don't care if the new chief is black, white, green or yellow. Race is not important but getting the job done is. Too many emphasis being placed on race instead of the task at hand. If you are killed by a Mexican, Black, White or any other race one thing about it, you are still dead. Curvygirl, you have a very good point.

Garry Owen
Good bye , you suck, don't hold your breathe for any improvements!

curvygirl
LETS SEE IF THE NEW CHIEF IS ACTUALLY ANY BETTER. I believe Annetta's hands have been tied this whole time so she's actually been kind of quiet. I do have sympathy for her because you can only work with what you are given to work with. Even she said it! It still doesn't justify some of the slackers in BPD. Now, let's see how many dirty electives Langford comes up with. Dirty is one thing I have never believed Annetta to be. Hopefully the funding that Langford claims to be getting for "extra policing" will be used appropriately. I'm just wondering where it will come from. Yall know my theory on why the drug dealers don't go away and neither do the drugs. (CONFISCATE AND RE-SELL) And this is MY opinion and I really don't care who doesn't like it. Look at the salaries of your average police officer and then look at the street value of some of the drugs that are confiscated. YOU DO THE MATH!!!!!

realist2
Will they search for the best person for the job, or just the best black, that will take the job, as usual? Let's see if Langford is as racist as the present mayor who hired Nunn just because she was a black woman cop. She was in over her head from day one and continued to sink. Maybe he will just hire a preacher since he has already said we just need prayer to reduce crime. That's about what Nunn believed. Didn't work, did it??

Crappieman
A step in the right direction. Maybe whoever he hires will utilize the program New York used to improve their enforcement. I understand that Birmingham has bought it but shelved it without implementation. Birmingham needs a motivated department but not a "gestapo type motivator". Too many police departments in our area operate on the "us or them (the public) mode" ie Shelby County Sherrif's Dept.

brunettebomber
YIPPPEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BamaBR549
Wow, do my eyes deceive me? This be sorcery!

I'm not holding my breath waiting for Langford's new selection, but any change is better than NO change in this situation.

randolph
Hurray! It's about time, now maybe she can get on with her music career. Lets hire a Kick a-- and take names Police Chief.
