(Sports Network) - Wide receiver D.J. Hackett and quarterback Chase Daniel were among the 21 players released by the Washington Redskins (web | news) on Saturday, as the team established its 53-man roster.

Hackett, who was signed during the preseason and thrown into the backup wide receiver competition, couldn't do enough to impress Jim Zorn and the Washington coaching staff during his brief time with the club. The former Colorado star, who posted 105 catches for 1,394 yards and nine touchdowns as a member of the Seahawks from 2005 through 2007, has struggled to make an impact since leaving Seattle for free agency in 2008. Hackett had just 13 catches in nine games with the Carolina Panthers last season.

Daniel, the former Missouri standout and an undrafted rookie free agent signed by the team during the spring, raised eyebrows with a strong preseason showing. Daniel was believed to be in contention for the third-string quarterback job behind Jason Campbell and Todd Collins, but was released.

Meanwhile, would-be No. 3 contender Colt Brennan was placed on season-ending injured reserve on Saturday with what are being reported by the team as hip and hamstring injuries.

Also released on Saturday were tight end Robbie Agnone, running back Anthony Alridge, offensive lineman Jeremy Bridges, tackle Scott Burley, defensive end Alex Buzbee, defensive tackle Antonio Dixon, running back Dominique Dorsey, cornerback Doug Dutch, wide receiver Keith Eloi, linebacker Cody Glenn, safety Lendy Holmes, defensive end Rob Jackson, kicker Dave Rayner, guard Rueben Riley, wide receiver Trent Shelton, defensive end J.D. Skolnitsky, linebacker Robert Thomas, fullback Eddie Williams, and linebacker Darrel Young.

Of that group, notables include Bridges, who appeared in 14 games with the Giants last season; Glenn, the Redskins' fifth-round choice in the April draft; Rayner, the journeyman who lost out to Shaun Suisham in the kicking competition; and Thomas, the former Rams, Packers, and Raider starter.

The Redskins will open their season on Sept. 13, when they travel to meet the NFC East rival New York Giants.
