People who spend lots of time outdoors can get into danger- whether it's getting lost or stranded, or even having health problems. But SPOT can come to the rescue. It's a GPS- enabled tracking device that can send out a call for help with the press of one button.
You simple set up your SPOT account online, then take the divce with you when you go out hiking, boating, or for other activities. If you get into trouble, just hit the 911 button. SPOT operators will contact the nearest rescue crews, and give them your GPS coordinates. That will get help to you quickly. You can hit another button on the unit to send a non-emergency help message to cell phones or e-mail addresses you specify on your account. You can also specify recipients for check-in messages to let them know you're OK.
SPOT can also be used for tracking a hike or other journey. In the tracking mode, it sends out a signal every ten minutes. You (or your friends and family) can go online to track your progress.
SPOT bsic service runs $100 a year. The tracking service is extra.
