Governor Bob Riley traded his typical black SUV for a van Wednesday morning. The governor travelled to a news conference in Birmingham in a CommuteSmart van, sharing the vehicle with a number of area workers who participate in CommuteSmart. CommuteSmart is a program that helps Alabama residents who are interested in carpooling. While most people become involved in order to save on gas money, another benefit, especially from an environmental perspective, is reduced traffic congestion. Earlier this year, Alabama's government website was changed to include a link where state employees can make a carpooling connection with other employees. That program is known as Commute with Company. Officials believe both initiatives are important for residents and the state, as a whole.
